Jingle Bells

July 24, 2025

Posted on July 24, 2025

The main reasons people put a bell on the collar of a cat is to alert pry if they are outdoor cats. They may do this to keep track of their cat in a multi cat household, especially if your cat likes to hide. They can alert other cats in the household that said cat is approaching which can be a positive or negative thing if a cat doesn’t want to be found. They also let people know the cat has an owner should they escape out of the house.

The downside of using a bell on a collar can cause stress for the cat wearing it. The constant ringing of a bell so close to their ear may cause potential hearing damage since a cat’s ears are very sensitive to sound. A bell can get in the way of a cat trying to groom himself. It can cause irritation or discomfort over time. It can also get caught on an object causing choking or injury. It can also be quite annoying to an owner if the cat is very active.

The decision to use a bell on a collar is up to your cat’s needs. By weighing the pros and cons you can make an informed decision regarding your cat’s safety and well being.
